Outdoor Learning

Our school is located on a country estate in beautiful woodland scenery. The moated castle dates from 1715 and has been in use as an international school since 1934.

The beautiful natural surroundings of Eerde offer a lot of possibilities for our primary students to learn, explore, and research. Therefore we take the students outside for at least a few afternoons during the school week. Beside the garden and orchard, we have access to our own outdoor classroom which is set up in cooperation with Natuurmonumenten, the estate owner.

All seasons have their features and always something interesting to explore.

Advantages of outside learning:

  • Stimulates creativity
  • Is more challenging and adventurous, which is very important for the development of every child
  • Has a positive impact on the social relationships between students, students learn to cooperate, listen to each other, and to be open to new ideas and solutions
  • Students are encouraged to help and support each other

At Eerde we teach different subjects during outdoor learning, most outdoor lessons are connected to the IPC topics of the students, but also Maths and English will be taught outside, as moving while practising supports the cognitive learning process. Learning outside provides the students also the opportunity to learn in a less abstract way.
